Type I X-ray Bursts from the Neutron-star Transient Xte J1701-462

چکیده
The neutron-star X-ray transient XTE J1701-462 was observed for ∼3 Ms with RXTE during its 2006-2007 outburst. Here we report on the discovery of three type-I X-ray bursts from XTE J1701462. They occurred as the source was in transition from the typical Z-source behavior to the typical atoll-source behavior, at ∼ 10% of the Eddington luminosity. The first burst was detected in the Z-source flaring branch; the second in the vertex between the flaring and normal branches; and the third in the atoll-source soft state. The detection of the burst in the flaring branch cast doubts on earlier speculations that the flaring branch is due to unstable nuclear burning of accreted matter. The last two of the three bursts show photospheric radius expansion, from which we estimate the distance to the source to be 8.8 kpc with a 15% uncertainty. No significant burst oscillations in the range 30 to 4000 Hz were found during these three bursts. Subject headings: stars: neutron — X-rays: binaries — X-rays: bursts — stars: distances

Rxte Observations of the First Transient Z Source Xte J1701–462: Shedding New Light on Mass Accretion in Luminous Neutron Star X-ray Binaries
We report on the first ten weeks of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the X-ray transient XTE J1701–462. Large count rate variations were accompanied by changes in the source’s spectral and variability properties. Based on comparisons with other sources we conclude that XTE J1701–462 had all the characteristics of the neutron star Z sources, i.e., the class of the brightest persistent...
متن کاملThe variable radio counterpart and possible large - scale jet of the new Z - source XTE J 1701 - 462
We report radio observations, made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, of the X-ray transient XTE J1701-462. This system has been classified as a new 'Z' source, displaying characteristic patterns of behaviour probably associated with accretion onto a low magnetic field neutron star at close to the Eddington limit. The radio counterpart is highly variable, and was detected in six of six...
متن کاملOptical and X – ray observations of the neutron star soft X – ray transient XTE J 1709 – 267
In this Paper we report on the discovery of the optical counterpart to the neutron star soft X–ray transient (SXT) XTE J1709–267 at an R–band magnitude of R=20.5±0.1 and 22.24±0.03, in outburst and quiescence, respectively. We further report the detection of type I bursts in RXTE data obtained during an outburst of the source in 2002. These bursts show a precursor event before the onset of the ...
متن کاملXTE J2123–058: A New Neutron Star X-Ray Transient
We report on optical and RXTE observations of a new high-latitude bursting X-ray transient, XTE J2123–058. We identified the optical counterpart and discovered a 5.9573 ± 0.0016 hr periodic optical modulation, which was subsequently shown to be the same as the spectroscopic orbital period. From the absence of orbital X-ray modulation and the presence of partial optical eclipses the binary incli...
متن کاملDiscovery of 1122 Hz X-ray Burst Oscillations from the Neutron-star X-ray Transient Xte J1739-285
We report the discovery of oscillations at 1122 ± 0.3 Hz in an X-ray burst from the X-ray transient XTE J1739-285. The signal has a peak Leahy power of 42.8 and, after consideration of the number of trials, has a chance probability of occurrence of 4×10 −5 , equivalent to a 4.2σ detection. The oscillation frequency suggests that XTE J1739-285 contains the fastest rotating neutron star yet found...
